Recent Purchases & Acquisitions
« on: August 15, 2010, 01:54:36 AM »
Progressive Ears has a thread like this, which might be helpful here. The problem with PE is everyone lists everything from Madonna to Liberace. Mostly what I purchase will be fusion, instrumental prog or electronics. A thread like this lets people know what is out there and they can ask questions about the bands. I buy 99% of my cds from two vendors, Audiophile Imports or Of Sound Mind. The amazing thing is each one may have a dozen cds for me at the same time and neither one will have the same discs or possibly heard of the bands the other one has for me. That just lets you know how much material is out there that you never knew existed.

1. 3erGezimmeR: Benny Greb, Peter Wolpl, Frank Itt
2. Mediterranea: ECCE ROCK
3. Gan Eden-Il giardino delle delizie: Ritratto di Ballerina
4. Fonderia: My Grandmother's Space Suit
5. Polestar 1: Flying Through The Universe
6. Sloche: Stadacone
7. Sloche: J'un Oeil
8. Efecto
9. Anachronos: Aqui Y Afuera
10. Powernut: 3 Nuts In A Pocket
11. Senza Nome
12. Soft Machine: DDR Jazz Workshop - Hamburg,Germany May 17, 1973
13. Magnetic Sound Machine: Chances & Accidents

I have not bought any vinyl for over a year now.
Only what I can find dead cheap.

So this is going to be embarrassing:
-the three Archies lps (which I got for free)
-quite a bit  of bigband stuff  (I got in excellent shape and for free because this is a genre THAT ABSOLUTELY DOESNT SELL ANYMORE. I hate bigband jazzbo, still I have garage space so why not?)
-Mahavishnu -Inner Mounting Flame  (50cents, and I didnt really need it either)

-from the library I got Denis Keldie Trio "Northern Hammond" cd (I saw him live in an outdoor concert where only some 20 people showed up, and he was so damn good ,it brought tears to my eyes.)

.................

Whats the Polestar 1 like?
Recently reissued, right? Because the orig private press is im,possibly rare.

Supposed to have lots keys -which is right up my tree.
But I dont know about a hard-Floyd-sound. Not sure i'd go for that.

Listening to THAT fusion lp is like sucking creamcorn from the socket, then licking thirty year old tire carcass at the back of Planet Earth ParkingLot.

I just picked these up yesterday so haven't listened yet. I may very well have the Polestar with my couple thousand albums upstairs. One day I will have to move them, just not looking forward to it.

Wow! I don't buy that much in a year!!!
A good month, indeed!

How's the Kick the Cat, by the way? I just heard of them recently.
....lame-ass, jive, pseudo bluesy, out-of-tune, noodling, wimped out, fucked up playing....

I second jaysee's purchase of the 3x Tim Miller cd's 'sides' 'trio 1' and 'trio 2'  excellent all.  Definite Holdsworth spiritual influence though Tim does his own thing.  Thoughtful jazz, great production and i think Tim uses a Canton which Holdsworth has just started to use and David Torn has used for a while now.

Also bought Frisell Live Download 11 Live in Budapest. & Tony Grey 'chasing shadows' great bass player who plays for Hiromi.

Cuong Vu 'Its only residual'

John Zorn 'news for lulu' with george russell on sax and frisell on subtle guitar. Very jazzy not difficult as one would normally expect of zorn.

On the pure shredding front i can recommend Prashant Aswani 'Revelation:Fully Loaded' who sounds a bit like Greg Howe on a good day with some fusion style bits thrown in to make it sound more interesting.

Al Di Meola 'one night in montreal' exciting concert but average sound.  Kei Akegai is especially good.

Haydn 'Symphonies 6, 7 & 8 (Morning, noon and sunset)

Martinu 'Symphonies 1 - 6' wow

Just bought the new  Eddie Jobson remaster of UK.  While this record ( in my mind ) was, and will always be a complete classic - the perfect example of mixing ( we've talked about this before ) of Jazz Fusion and Progressive genres, I was a bit taken back on first listen.  I might have expected too much, but I'll need to give it a few more spins before I can comment on the quality of the remaster.

Anyone else purchase it?  How does Eddie's remaster hold up to you?
Find me at www.deanwatson.bandcamp.com
I'm also on CD Baby!
Coming soon "Fantasizer!" My 3rd CD release!
