What fusion lp/cd you listening to today?
« on: August 04, 2010, 04:20:22 AM »
(Doesnt seem to be this most basic of threads.)

JUKKA TOLLONEN  "Tollonen!"  ( Only got the Canadian press. Finn would be better. The Brain label press would be best!)
Listening to THAT fusion lp is like sucking creamcorn from the socket, then licking thirty year old tire carcass at the back of Planet Earth ParkingLot.

That's Tolonen. Tollonen actually sounds funny. Finnish word "tollo" means "dork".  ;D

I've been listening to dutch drummer René Engel's cd "Nostalgia" with Richard Hallebeek on guitar.
Spotify playlist : Confusion? Fusion!

Recently restored my old turntable, so back spinning some vinyl. First things I listened to were some early ECM records, arguably fusion in terms of their range of improv styles. Today, I'm listening to at least parts of:
Bill Connors - Of Mist and Melting
Mick Goodrick - In Pas(s)ing
Jan Garborek - Places

Dont care that much for the ECM fusion.
Think the last one I played was Garbarek "Sark" (which is a pretty difficult title to find, even though it is on ECM).

The Ryptal on ECM is pretty well all ace.

Separate threads should be started on select labels.
Myself I'd be interested in hearing on the great MPS label.

I used to have a lot of ECM stuff on record. It was usually pretty dark and moody. I liked the ECM John Abercrombie recordings. The Metheny stuff too.

I listened to this on my way to work,

Great German fusion band. They do great versions of King Kong and Zoot Allures on this.

Indeed, much Rypdal is ace (need to spin "Rypdal/Vitous/Dejohnette" soon), but the Connors and Goodrick recordings I mentioned have some great moments w/ the Connors being more atmospheric and the Goodrick more tune based (better overall record). Not as keen on the Garborek, but respect it's influence.
But, my goodness, Garborek is often mixed distractingly loud on ECM recordings - really OTT on the Connors (the Goodrick has John Surman on sax and it's mixed more evenly).

Dont care that much for the ECM fusion.

Sorry, that should be "Sart", not "Sark" (the island).
......................
Dont have much ECM in the collection, but I do have these:
Ryptal -most
Codona
Torn-Cloud over Mercury
Abercrombie-Timeless (I think I recent read that "Night" lp has tasty organ???)

Might have a Micus and a Tibbetts also.

WISH  I had Dauner - Output.

They say these are ones to get: Michael Naura, the two by Julian Priester,Just Music,  Conference of the Birds . But I never heard.

Yep - moody & atmospheric. So much on ECM is languid, sleepytime-fusion.
Lps like Ryptal "Chaser" seem to be by far the exception.
