Yiorgos Fakanas - Acrobat

Fusion Discussion / The state of modern fusion
« on: December 09, 2016, 06:04:46 PM »
This is brought about by Peter's post about the new Jeff Richman album "Richman is one of the few musicians we have still producing quality fusion music and there are not a lot of new acts out there now"

I wonder if the other few people here paying attention feel the same way. Not about Richman, but the lack of reliable artists, and the lack of new artists. Me personally, I couldn't disagree more! Particulary on the new end of things. I feel like there's so many, I have a hard time keeping up. Far more depth than the much ballyhooed glory days of the 70s, certainly.

For the purposes of parameters, let's define a 'new act' as a band or solo artist who debuted in the 2010's. Here's some I like:
Tohpati (Ethnomission and Bertiga)
Cpt. Kirk
Final Step
Roberto Badoglio
Peter Fernandes
Mike Prigodich
Wendell Holmes, Jr.
Art Schloemer
Impact Fuze
Felix Lehrmann
Kristian Terzic
Antoine Fafard(as a solo artist)
Justin Millott
Carlos Fischer
The Funky Knuckles
Open Quartet/Net Qtet
MX Fusion
The Avengers
Resonance Project
Beka Gochiashvili
Rami Lakkis
Senri Kawaguchi
The Mencial Project
Olivier Contat Project
Janusz Mackiewicz
Ali Neander
The 4 Korners
Michael Evdemon
Gravitational Force Field
Stimpy Lockjaw
Kung Fu
Beyond Turbines
Linder Bros.
Bob Frye
Renaud Louis Servais Group
Francisco Fattoruso
Indro Hardjodikoro
Tobias Faulhammer
Mike Gotthard
Andre Nieri

Whew! That comes from a fairly quick scan too.

What say you?

Thought it might be fun to make a playlist of fusion cover songs. So what are everyone's favorites?

Fusion Discussion / Top releases of 2015
« on: December 16, 2015, 05:33:59 AM »
What has everyone got? Here is what I think I will go with, in approximate order:

Beyond Turbines
Panzerballett - Breaking Brain
Snarky Puppy - Sylva
David Hines - Kaleidoscope
Wendell Holmes Jr. - Lewis Ave.
Shob - Pragmatism
Bunny Brunel - Invent Your Future
Damian Erskine - Within Sight
Sebastiaan Cornelissen - Not This Time
Koichi Yabori - You Were There
Dwiki Dharmawan - So Far So Close
John McLaughlin - Black Light

Not much separation between most of them though. A lot of good stuff that I don't know I will look back on as classics, years later

Apparently, they found him collapsed in his hotel room in Milan on tour with Mike Stern and now he's on life support. More news as it becomes available. This is not good.  :(

Fusion Discussion / Mid-year report
« on: July 01, 2013, 07:36:32 AM »
Halfway thru 2013, what have you got? And what stands out? I have these:

Alain Caron - Multiple Faces
Richard Hallebeek - RHP II
Senri Kawaguchi - A La Mode
Niacin - Krush
Antoine Fafard - Occultus Tramitis
Martin Miller - The Other End
Marbin - Last Chapter of Dreaming
Steve Jenkins and the Coaxial Flutter
GUT - Le Chien du Jazz
Matthew Garrison - 12 Months
Geraldo Heinrique Bulhoes - Quasar
Joseph Tawadros - Chameleons of the White Shadow
Rene Engel - Slow Life

Also tried Gary Willis - Retro, Ray Russell - Now, More than Ever, Grand General, and the Ken Talve trio piece, but found them a bit lacking, for me.

Quite a few very good releases, but I'm not sure I've heard a great, classic album yet.

Fusion Discussion / Your 70's fusion Top 10
« on: January 28, 2013, 10:12:43 AM »
Was talking with a friend who ranks Spectrum and Mind Transplant at the top, and while I like both records, I don't think they'd crack my top 10 for the 70s. Both would be in that 11-20 range, I think. Gonna assemble a list now. What's yours look like?

Fusion Discussion / Chick's new band
« on: January 16, 2013, 04:03:55 PM »
Anyone see this power lineup?  :o

Chick Corea & The Vigil with Tim Garland, Hadrien Feraud, Marcus Gilmore, Charles Altura

Altura and Feraud are absolute monsters, both of whom haven't been on enough records IMO. Gilmore is very good as well. Not all that familiar with Garland, honestly.

Tour dates already booked starting in March. No word on a cd.

We're about 10 months in now. How is your top 10 shaping up? Good way to catch up on the essentials. What's left to come out still?

This is an approximate 10 for me. The order is likely still in flux

Panzerballett - Tank Goodness
Hiromi - Move
Fazjaz - Season IV
Tohpati Bertiga - Riot
Rodrigo y Gabriela - Area 52
Morglbl - Brutal Romance
Tribal Tech - X
John McLaughlin - Now Here This
Funky Knuckles - As of Lately
Ohmphrey - Posthaste
