Introductions & other topics / Forum Outage
« on: May 07, 2016, 09:58:03 AM »
Hi guys,

Sorry for the recent outage. There was an error with the web host thinking the account was unpaid, when in fact, it had been paid. I know I don't spend a lot of time here, but am happy to keep footing the bill to keep this site up and running as long as people are getting some use out of it.

...has just uploaded a bunch of recording session videos, each one featuring a different special guest - one with his son (I guess) on bass who looks to be about 14. Definitely worth checking out - they really groove. I presume these are from a forthcoming album. Anyone know anything about this?

Has anyone else checked out Virg's new vid? I downloaded it from his webshop. I've been digging him ever since getting blown away at the Holdsworth concert.

You all probably got this in their newsletter. Pretty odd, as they say, but cool.

"Hey all-
As you can see from the subject line, we've got some big news:
The Aristocrats' brand new album Culture Clash cracked the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart Top 10 this week! The album hit #8 on that chart, and also debuted at #16 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart.
Needless to say, we're totally blown away, and frankly, a little shocked. We're also a bit amused at being classified as any kind of "jazz". :-)
But more than anything, we're grateful to everyone who went out and bought the album, because that's what made it happen. So, from the bottom of our hearts: THANK YOU!
Meanwhile The Aristocrats U.S. Summer Tour is going incredibly well. Venues have been packed and there seems to be some real excitement out there. For our part, we're just going to keep on touring and doing what we do.
With that said, here's the rest of our tour dates, starting with the storied Northeast coming right up this week!

Fusion Discussion / Yellowjackets
« on: July 18, 2013, 06:36:42 PM »
I got invited last minute to the Yellowjackets at Yoshis last night. Aside from the smart phones it was a great show. I had stopped following them after their S/T album because they got a little light for my tastes. But it was cool. I'm really digging the EWI stuff Mintzer is doing. Definite Brecker vibe.

Felix Pastorious has replaced Haslip, who left a year ago to pursue other projects. I went with some music biz buddies and got to gang out with some of the band. It was fun getting blown away by Will Kennedy then hearing him say the drum kit sucked and he held back. Chatted with Felix for a bit, and Kai Eckhardt who happened to be there to see the show. Felix is a very nice guy, and a hell of a player - we just chatted about the band, city life, and other small talk. Didn't get into the elephant in the room. And Kai is just an amazingly gracious guy.

is smart phones at concerts. Trying to get into the mood of the show I was at last night was tough with the sea of smart phone screens glaring at me from the audience. do the not see the irony in that they are watching the live show they are at trough the screen of their phone? And the guy next to me who was checking his texts every 2 minutes on some giant android thing that didn't seem to have the auto-dimming feature that my phone has. Really? can he not disconnect for an hour and a half and enjoy a show? And the recording has become so invasive that the venues & artists have pretty much given up on trying to stop it. Used to be they's come after you with a Ginsu at Yoshis, but not any more. One might conclude it is a generational thing, but most of the offenders were older fellows.

Smart phones are really a blessing and a curse. One of the greatest inventions in my lifetime, but they can make us into fools sometimes. Yes, I am basically a grumpy old fart.

A couple shots from before shows at the Baked potato. Can anyone guess who was playing based on the gear? Anyone have similar photos?

Introductions & other topics / CD Baby offering lossless downloads
« on: April 13, 2013, 12:32:18 PM »
I just learned this fantastic news today. CD Baby is offering multiple file types, including lossless flac.

I just purchased 3 albums: Positive Charge by Robert Baglione/Victor Wooten, Spontageous by Audric Jankauskas, and One Mind by Ben Sherman/ Angel Resto/ Frank Young. When I went to download, there was an option to select file type. I selected flac, and I received a message "OH NO! THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH THE DOWNLOAD YOU PURCHASED!
Don't worry, though. If you're getting this message, our digital music specialists have been notified. Fixing this for you is their top priority." I'm assuming that these obscure CDs are not ripped to flac yet, and that the CDBaby "gnomes" are going to do so on an on-demand basis. I'll post updates as things get sorted out. Not exactly the instant gratification I was hoping for, but exciting nonetheless.

Introductions & other topics / 2 blown amps - learn from my mistakes
« on: March 06, 2013, 12:05:39 PM »
Over the weekend, I was doing some work on the wall where my home theatre lives. Rerouting some wires & moving receptacles. I was rewiring a wall-mounted speaker jack which feeds the rear channel of my HT and the kitchen ceiling speakers. I was tired & forgot the receiver was on, and the Sonos Connect Amp, which is never really off, were both hooked up. I somehow shorted both amps together and a big poof of smoke came out of the sonos. Both of them them are fried. I've never done this before in my life, but managed to do 2 at once on Sunday. I have the receiver at a repair place - hopefully just a blown transistor & fuse. If it's major, the receiver which once cost $1000 can be replaced with a used one for $150 (the old heavy MIJ Dolby-D receivers are the best). Luckily Sonos has a liberal replacement program, and is selling me a new one at a quarter of retail.

I know not to do this, but I was tired and in a hurry and forgot to be careful. Please learn from my stupidity and always power off & unplug your amps before fiddling with the speaker wires.
