Title: Must-hear list of fusion albums
Post by: funkle on June 18, 2010, 06:33:15 AM
In response to FatJeff's introduction, I've started this thread. Have at it!

Hi,

My name is Jeff and I live in Denver.  I'm an amateur guitarist, and I'm keen on learning more about jazz fusion.  I'm actually enrolled in the Jazz Studies program at a local university (two more years to go).  Most of what we've been exposed to is swing, bop and post-bop/60s stuff, so fusion is pretty new to me.

I have listened to a bit of Return to Forever, Mahavishnu, and some of Miles' early 70s stuff...some early Metheny...I'm intrigued, but not really sure what I'm hearing!  :-0  What would be cool is to see a "must-hear" list of fusion albums.  Anyone know of such a thing?

Anyway, here I am.  I hope to learn a thing or two.

Gotts throw "Spectrum" by Billy Cobham in there, for me.

I really dig B.C. And Tommy Bolin was a BEAST as well!

JaySee, Interesting list. I have some of those. But I haven't heard a bunch of the ones you mention - I'd probably like them based on the ones I know. Improvisation is one of my favorites - I was just listening to it in the car.

Where can I find BPM? Can't find it at any of the usual places.

Terry Bozzio is selling it on his website for $20.

nice lists: although i would pick other titles  of many of those bands. Like Return to Forever, i would go with hymn of the seventh galaxy. Its ground breaking work for the time with visceral guitar work not the smooth dimeola stuff. most of those tunes they feature all through out their careers live.

"The Lost Trident Sessions "  is nothing special.

Ive always disliked that Soft Heap lp.

What, no McLaughlin "Devotion"?

Unforgiveable!

I dunno, bands like Chicago, BS & T, If, Chase, The Flock.....they are fusions of rock and jazz, surely...but they strike me as a different type of music than those I'd normally call "Fusion" bands--MO, WR, RTF, etc.

Also, Don Ellis.......there's some rock influence, but somehow this stuff is on the periphery for me.

..and those Sting albums...well....

I like 'em.  I wouldn't call 'em Fusion, though.   For that matter, I don't call Steely Dan fusion either.

Perhaps this gets more to the question of what exactly Fusion is, anyway.

Everything ever done by Joe Zawinul ...
Joe Zawinul's Syndicate should be primo on the list ... he is a major father of fusion ... cannot, & should not be ignored ...
Other then the mention of Weather Report, I'm really surprised he isn't on any of these lists
(if he is, I must have missed it ...)

Hey! welcome back.

Most of the solo Joe Z CDs are on Geoff's list on the first page. His solo stuff doesn't get the attention that WR did.
